Understanding the Need
RUSH University Medical Center set out to transform and expand an existing office building into a comprehensive cancer care destination. Working with Eckenhoff Saunders, the team reimagined the building to bring advanced treatment, diagnostic services, and patient wellness together within a modern, patient-centered environment. 

Supporting Patients + Care Teams
Cancer care environments ask a great deal of patients, families, and the clinicians who support them. Alongside spaces designed for treatment and patient wellness, special attention was given to the staff experience, including a dedicated recharge space where care teams can step away, reset, and restore during demanding days. The space has been especially well received by staff, reinforcing the importance of supporting the people who provide care. 

Complexity Made Simple
The adaptive reuse brought highly specialized healthcare environments and technology into an existing office building, including a new 2,300-square-foot LINAC vault addition for advanced radiation therapy. The facility also brings radiation oncology, medical oncology, infusion, pharmacy, lab, and comprehensive imaging services together under one roof. 

The Result
The transformation creates a sophisticated cancer care environment that considers the experience of patients, families, and staff alike. From advanced treatment capabilities and holistic therapy spaces to places dedicated to caregiver respite, the new facility supports the many human needs involved in cancer care.
