Forward Space was thrilled to host the 2nd annual Steelcase Better is Possible Design Challenge in Chicago this year! We welcomed a diverse group of Changemakers from all walks of life to the Merchandise Mart, united with a shared mission: to ignite their creativity and brainstorm solutions to the pivotal question:
“How can we foster a sense of belonging where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued in their workplace and the world?”
What does it truly mean to belong? Our randomly assigned teams dove into this profound question through rich, in-depth discussions, drawing from their own personal experiences of belonging and not belonging. Participants explored how their personal experiences related and differed.
Translating their open conversations into insightful questions, teams engaged in dynamic interviews with members from other groups, broadening their perspectives and deepening their insights. Armed with the honest opinions and stories of their peers, they zeroed in on specific roadblocks to belonging and teamed up to brainstorm remedies to these problems.
The outcome? A range of diverse and innovative approaches. Participants identified challenges such as fostering relationships with coworkers, the challenges associated with making an unassigned desk match one’s unique needs and bridging the perceived gap between employees and leadership.
Changemakers then rolled up their sleeves to workshop prototypes of products, design systems, and workplace protocols aimed at overcoming these challenges. Using crafting materials, they built tangible models and representations of their envisioned solutions, bringing their ideas to life.
These solutions were then pitched to the entire group. Ideas ranged from simple yet impactful concepts—like meeting tables with conversation starters to encourage friendly coworker connections—to high-tech innovations such as transferable workstations designed to enhance belonging in all corners of the workplace.
The day-long workshop offered a unique opportunity to explore one question from countless perspectives. Throughout this inspiring process, teams shared insights, listened actively, collaborated openly, and dreamed big. In the end, they uncovered solutions that could be implemented immediately at little to no cost alongside visionary ideas that may reshape the future of work.
Our participants weren’t the only ones tackling this question. Changemakers from 20 cities around the globe participated simultaneously, creating a vibrant network of collaboration. As teams in Chicago brainstormed, they were inspired by the progress of their counterparts in different time zones, fostering a global sense of connection and support for physical and social belonging.
By crafting a space where everyone truly belongs, Steelcase and Forward Space cultivated a safe environment for reflection and sharing. Together, participants harnessed their experiences to envision a brighter, more inclusive future.
